NEW ANAMOOSE BLOG ADDRESS

Anamoose now has a new blog address:  anamoose.wordpress.com.

The first blog site was set up by the Horizons Leadership Program under the Northwest Area Foundation.  They have decided to not support the blogs any more, but have assisted Anamoose in changing to a new blog site.  Viewers that log on to the old blog (anamoose.communityblogs.us) will automatically be transferred to the new blog site.

ANAMOOSE JDA UPDATE

The Anamoose  JDA (Job Development Authority) was organized in January, 2003 and receives it's primary funding from the Anamoose Civic Club through it's gaming fund. The main purpose of the JDA is to support existing businesses and promote new businesses. The JDA was instrumental in the refurbishing of the local cafe. It also assisted in the purchase of the building that is currently owned by an upholstery shop. A grant was given to upgrade a local daycare center. Brochure holders were put up in several local businesses. At the January meeting Maria Effertz Hanson, McHenry County Jobs Development Authority Director, spoke on the Minot Magic Fund Marketing Grant and how local communities can access it

SAVE THE BANK

In Anamoose the historic bank building located on Main St. next to the VFW has been purchased by a group of concerned citizens, wanting to save and preserve the building for the future. The work is not done though, but a huge hurdle has been removed by the purchase. The process of planning and securing the funding to make this building a place of pride can now take place.

ANAMOOSE HISTORIES

If you want to know something about Anamoose's history, the person to go to is Helen Nolden. At age 86 Helen remembers things that happened back in the early days as if they happened yesterday. Helen has seven new articles added to the Anamoose History section. She was a columnist in the late 80s and early 90s for the Velva Valley Star. For ten years she wrote articles twice a month for the paper. She also wrote several articles for Harvey, Minot and Mouse River Journal newspapers from 1972-1999. "People need to remember these articles were written years ago about things that took place back then."

GEOLOGICAL FORMATION NAMED AFTER ANAMOOSE

Steele Lake (or Stelow Lake as commonly called), directly south of Anamoose, resulted 12,000 years ago when a glacier lifted a chunk of material and moved it as a whole, and set it down 1/10th mile to the southeast. This is according to an article by John P. Bluemle in North Dakota Geological Survey-North Dakota Notes No. 1.

There are other hill-hole combinations in North Dakota but the most striking and obvious is by Anamoose-a discrete hill of ice-thrust material, situated a short distance down-glacier from the source depression of similar size and shape. Thus such hill-hole combinations are called "Anamoose".

These formations are usually formed over buried aquifers (layers that contain water). There are several situations where the increased water pressure pushes the rock or sediment up in the path of the advancing ice. These blocks of material are then moved just a short distance, to result in a hill from the moved material, and a hole from where it came from. "A typical ice-thrust hill is about 100 ft and less than a mile across." The best hills are found in places where the glacier stopped advancing almost as soon as it completed the job of thrusting the materials.
