ANAMOOSE HORIZON LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Anamoose has had a blog site up and running since December, 2007. There are now five people from Anamoose doing the blogging:  2 students-Kaya Engen & Brianne Johnson, and Mardell Helm, Phyllis Peiler Zimmerman, and Alyce Heer. Blogs are different than articles for a newspaper or this web site as they are written in a story telling form from a person's view of what is going on in the community. The blog site was set up as part of our final Visioning phase in the Horizons 18 month Leadership program. The articles apply to issues of leadership, poverty, and community action. Check out the blog site at anamoose.communityblogs.us. Add your comments by holding down the mouse pointer over the last light word under the article. Click on the pictures to enlarge them.

ANAMOOSE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Planning June 28th Wedding of Joe and Ana-Moose
Pam Heim, Richard Derrickson, Phyllis Peiler Zimmerman, Fern Reinowski, Bonnie Docter, Rev. Danell Olson. Also on the committee are Susan Litrell, Dick Hauser, & Alyce Heer.

Anamoose is participating in a community leadership program called Horizons.  We are in the final phase,Community Coaching and Action, of the 18 month program. The first four segments of participation were:  Spotlights/Showcases, Study Circles, Leadership Plenty, and Community Visioning.

Now we are putting together our many ideas and skills generated in the Study Circles and Leadership Plenty classes.  We are including the broader community in mobilizing, creating and adopting a shared vision and a plan for poverty reduction.  We have exceeded the requirement that 15% of the community be involved. We will be receiving $10,000 at the completion of the program in June 2008.

We are working on many goals in our Business, Communications and Housing committees that we set up in our Study Circles.  The Business committee is working on getting businesses in Anamoose.

We have a listing of homes, lots and farmsteads available on our website, and more details can be obtained from our Housing committee.

The young and old are included in our Strategic Plan, as we know how important both are in our community.

Tourism has a prominent place in our plan. We want hunters, fishermen, and birders to come to our area.  We are planning a special day on Saturday, June 28th when we celebrate the wedding of Joe and Ana-Moose when Ana is added to our welcome sign.

Our Anamoose brochure will soon be finished and will be distributed in many rest areas in ND and in our area.

We have put together a Home Rule Charter that will be voted on in June.  This will give our city more opportunity to make decisions on issues that affect us.

Education is very important to us..  Excel computer classes are being held in February.  The 12 adults in the class are learning Microsoft spreadsheets and bookkeeping.

We have many leadership books in our Senior Center that were given to us by the Horizons program.

We pride ourselves on the looks of our community, but have set up goals to continue to keep Anamoose clean and attractive.

With our $10,000 from the Horizons program we are setting up an Anamoose Area Community Foundation fund.

GEOLOGICAL FORMATION NAMED AFTER ANAMOOSE

Steele Lake (or Stelow Lake as commonly called), directly south of Anamoose, resulted 12,000 years ago when a glacier lifted a chunk of material and moved it as a whole, and set it down 1/10th mile to the southeast. This is according to an article by John P. Bluemle in North Dakota Geological Survey-North Dakota Notes No. 1.

There are other hill-hole combinations in North Dakota but the most striking and obvious is by Anamoose-a discrete hill of ice-thrust material, situated a short distance down-glacier from the source depression of similar size and shape. Thus such hill-hole combinations are called "Anamoose".

These formations are usually formed over buried aquifers (layers that contain water). There are several situations where the increased water pressure pushes the rock or sediment up in the path of the advancing ice. These blocks of material are then moved just a short distance, to result in a hill from the moved material, and a hole from where it came from. "A typical ice-thrust hill is about 100 ft and less than a mile across." The best hills are found in places where the glacier stopped advancing almost as soon as it completed the job of thrusting the materials.

For more information on the ice-thrusting in North Dakota go to https://www.dmr.nd.gov/ndgs/ndnotes/ndn11.htm

Old house on west side of Anamoose burned down.  These are the type of things we are working on in Anamoose to promote a clean community. The abandoned property was cleaned up for new family housing.
