ANAMOOSE HISTORIC BANK RECEIVES $5000 GRANT

The North Dakota Community Foundation has awarded $5,000 to the Anamoose Historic Bank association. This grant will be used, along with other funds, to replace the roof on the bank built in 1909.

Making the award is Kevin J. Dvorak, Pres. and CEO of NDCF, to Phyllis Zimmerman on the left and Bonnie Helm on the right.

This award is one of only 38 chosen from a list of 139 applications to NDCF seeking its assistance this year.

The NDCF, founded in 1976, seeks to support the needs of ND educational, charitable, arts, scientific, and health areas.

The historic bank was purchased a year ago by a small group of Anamoose residents as an outgrowth of the planning for the Anamoose All-School Reunion which occurred this past summer.

“The impetus for purchasing the building was really so that we could paint the exterior trim in preparation for the All-School Reunion,” said Helm laughingly, chair of the Anamoose Historic Bank association (also known locally as the ‘Save The Bank’ group).

The mission of the association has expanded to include saving the beautiful historic building, making it a viable building for hosting community events, preventing another hole from appearing in the downtown (which would occur if it had to be torn down), and to becoming an exciting conduit for helping to revitalize the city’s Main Street.

The group states there is a great deal that must be done to the building before it will be completely renovated and available for community events. However, as Helm states for the group, “We continue to focus on the big picture and remain optimistic about the building’s future viability.”

On December 11 the association will be hosting its first community events, the Anamoose Holiday Tour of Homes from 3-6pm, as well as a Holiday Bake Sale with Dessert & Beverage Bar also on December 11 from 2:30-7pm at 409 Main Street. For more information watch for the announcements in the Buyer’s Guide.

A BEAUTIFUL DAY!

In spite of a forecast for rain, Sunday, August 28th, turned out beautifully for the 3rd annual Anamoose Area Community Foundation Corn Feed/Silent Auction.  About 180 people came to eat corn, hamburgers, hot dogs, & bars; and bid on Silent Auction items and 21 people volunteered their time to pick corn, prepare hamburger patties, & work on Sunday,

Francis Seefeld entertained the crowd with his accordion followed by Danelle & Heide Olson & daughters singing some musical selections.

There were 59 donated articles on the Silent Auction.  They ranged from large items such as one ton of anhydrous, an 80 acre fall application of anhydrous & exercise equipment, to smaller items such as toys, pictures, purse, many cash certificates, etc.

ANAMOOSE AREA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Our Anamoose Area Community Foundation (AACF)was started in 2008 by a group of residents concerned about a lack of funding for local organizations.  The AACF provides a method of receiving funds/donations to benefit projects or non-profit organizations in the Anamoose area.  We are associated with the North Dakota Community Foundation (NDCF), which is a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation under IRS code 501(c)3 & ND state law.

Our mission is to improve the quality of life in our community through charitable giving & promoting philanthropy.

The guidelines for grants are:

  • Organizations must be recognized under IRS code 501(c)3 to qualify for a grant.  Any organization with an official relationship to city or state government (school, park district, nursing home, etc) would also qualify.
  • Grants shall be awarded to organizations that serve the Anamoose, ND area.
  • Grants for multi-year requests (pledges) will not be made, however an organization may re-apply for a grant each year.  Organizations may qualify for one grant per year.
  • Grants to religious organizations will be limited to those activities which are non-denominational and serve the entire community.
  • Grants may be awarded annually at the discretion of the Advisory Committee.

In funding decisions, the board will consider the following:

  • Organizational management and integrity
  • Level of local involvement and support
  • The number of people to be served.
  • The impact of the grant on the success of the project.
Testimonials by AACF board members

Alyce Heer

Keeping Anamoose viable is important to me. The AACF is a long term way to achieve this goal.

Bill Goodwin

We want to see improvement in our city. We want to keep it active and growing.

Rose and Joe Weninger

Being active in the AACF is one way of giving back to our community.  Anamoose is a thriving community and we feel it is important to help keep it that way. The AACF will assist Anamoose in accomplishing future goals in the community by providing financial support through grant money that may not otherwise be available. As our fund grows, the “harvest” of our work will be more readily visible to the community. We care about our community; supporting an organization that will continue to give even after we are no longer living is gratifying.

Shirley NitzPhyllis Zimmerman

To be a member of the committee you are a part of the community by helping the Anamoose Area Community Foundation organization and town with the funds to help sustain our town and keep it vital.

Phyllis Zimmerman

It is exciting to be able to give to a worthy cause for the betterment of the community.

Dick Hauser

It keeps our small community active and open for new opportunities.

Brent Weninger

I want to see improvements in Anamoose.

GRANTS

The Anamoose Area Community Foundation is a permanent fund under the North Dakota Community Foundation where gifts from many individuals and businesses are pooled and invested in a diversified portfolio. An added bonus under the NDCF is the potential for matching funds. Each year the NDCF will match all gifts made to the AACF dollar for dollar up to the first $10,000.  If we raise $25,000, an additional $5,000 will  be added to the matching total.  Donations to the fund are tax deductible.

A portion of the earnings from the fund are used on an annual basis to make grants to local charities or government entities (such as school or park district).  The beauty of this type of fund is that it isn’t tied to a specific organization or area of funding.  Each year the Advisory Committee accepts applications from eligible organizations and makes determinations on grants based on the community’s greatest needs in any given year.

Past grant recipients:

2009-$1800 total

  • Anamoose Civic Club-(summer youth recreation program)-$500
  • Anamoose Park Board (new roof for bathroom)-$500
  • City of Anamoose (sidewalks, curbs, gutter)-$500
  • AACF (fund raising support)-$300

2010-$2900 total

  • Anamoose Civic Club (summer youth recreation program)-$500
  • Tri-County Senior Meals (nutritious meals for seniors)-$500
  • City of Anamoose (sidewalks, curbs, gutter)-$500
  • AACF (fund raising support)-$500

Grants are usually awarded in June of each year.  Please visit www.NDCF.net/Anamoose for information concerning grant guidelines and deadlines, and to download an application form.

BUILDING THE ANAMOOSE AREA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

How We Raise Money

Each year, the Advisory Committee sets a fundraising goal and creates a plan to reach that goal.  Over the last three years, we have used a variety of methods to educate residents, business owners, and alumni about the fund and to ask for their support.

In 2008, we mailed letters to all Anamoose Alumni and businesses in the area.    We also contacted Financial Professionals to make them aware of legislation on charitable donations and local gifting options for their clients.

In 2009, we held our first annual community wide Corn Feed & Auction on Sunday, August 23rd at the Anamoose Park.  Close to $4,000 was raised.

In 2010, we had another successful Corn Feed &  Silent Auction, and on November 16th we held a fund raising Chili Feed at the Anamoose Senior Center.  Combined, the two events helped us reach our goal of $10,000.

Our goal for 2011 is again $10,000, as that is the amount matched dollar for dollar by the North Dakota Community Foundation.  In February we held a calendar raffle where we gave out $1,025 and raised over $1,600.  Plans are in the works for the 3rd annual Corn Feed this fall.

We also accept donations year round via mail or online at www.NDCF.net/Anamoose.  Gifts can be mailed to:  Anamoose Area Community Foundation, PO Box 174, Anamoose, ND 58710.

  • Bequests-Donors may provide gifts to the fund through their will.  The will can provide for stated sum, percentage or for the residue and remainder of the estate, real or personal.
